MRI Machines Could Spread MRSA

There is no doubt that the best way to deal with the super bug MRSA is to prevent exposure in the first place. Of course this is easier said than done and it requires vigilance.
Community acquired MRSA is a major concern but there are still worries about hospital acquired MRSA. Most hospitals are doing an excellent job with sanitizing areas. Obviously it is an important task. But, a study out of Ireland has raised a key issue concerning a commonly used testing apparatus– the MRI.
If you think about it, the MRI is a place where people are brought in with everything from sports related injuries to major infectious diseases and illnesses. The Ireland study found that the MRI may be the toughest
Tool in the hospital to clean because of its design and a hard to clean area called the bore of the unit. The study finds that this sanitation should be placed at a premium because the potential from spread of MRSA is quite possible and happened in their study.
All hospitals are told to clean surfaces which come into contact with patients between every test but this report suggests rigorous attention to detail in the cleaning.

Buying the whole warehouse

We were busy this week cleaning out a warehouse we purchased from one of our hospitals. They had a lot of old equipment which had never been used and was sitting there for a number of years.
They were in need of new equipment but with the healthcare industry getting tighter their budget was limited. We traded the entire warehouse for four brand new monitors.  Our transaction led the imaging department to look to see what they have to trade for a new ultrasound machine. I guess Trade Medical Excess is doing a good job!  “Off budget Capital Improvement”

Drug-resistant staph deaths may surpass AIDS toll

Deaths tied to these infections may exceed those caused by AIDS, said one public health expert commenting on the new study. The report shows just how far one form of the staph germ has spread beyond its traditional hospital setting.

The overall incidence rate was about 32 invasive infections per 100,000 people. That’s an “astounding” figure, said an editorial in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association, which published the study.

Most drug-resistant staph cases are mild skin infections. But this study focused on invasive infections—those that enter the bloodstream or destroy flesh and can turn deadly.

Researchers found that only about one-quarter involved hospitalized patients. However, more than half were in the health care system—people who had recently had surgery or were on kidney dialysis, for example. Open wounds and exposure to medical equipment are major ways the bug spreads. In recent years, the resistant germ has become more common in hospitals and it has been spreading through prisons, gyms and locker rooms, and in poor urban neighborhoods.

The new study offers the broadest look yet at the pervasiveness of the most severe infections caused by the bug, called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. These bacteria can be carried by healthy people, living on their skin or in their noses.
